Description
WWI “TRENCH ART” PICTURE FRAME: HAND CARVED BY A GERMAN POW & DATED 1918 WITH “10” DENOTING HOT SPRINGS, NC PRISONER OF WAR CAMP
Trench Art Picture Frame Measures 8×6 Inches and According to Research, This is A Commonly Seen Design Created By German Prisoners of War Held In US Camps. Frame is of excellent quality, ornate and clearly reads “Prisoner of War” across the top with the the number “10” just below it. United States Prisoner of War Camp Number 10 was located in Hot Springs, North Carolina. Frame remains in overall GOOD Condition but does show one CRACK to the upper portion in between the “A” and “R” in “WAR,” which can be clearly seen in the photos. There are also some minor signs of age in the form of darkening, but no other readily apparent blemishes and the back portion remains very good as well. While not perfect, this is a SCARCE piece of POW Trench Art that remains very attractive and is a definitely reminiscent of the carvings seen on cuckoo clocks and other German works of the period.
