Description
KOREAN WAR WOUNDED USMC CORPORAL’S NAMED & NUMBERED DRESS ALPHA COAT WITH VISOR HAT & RESEARCH: LOCAL VETERAN FROM NEW ORLEANS
World War Two Marine Corps Dress Alpha Visor Hat with Coat Dated April 1942 and Named to Corporal Carol Dion “Donnie” Stenger of New Orleans, Louisiana. Coat also bears Corporal Stenger’s service number, but the hat bears no information identifying it to CPL Stenger. CPL Stenger was a member of 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division and was wounded on 19 September 1951. It appears that he was wounded severely and unable to return to service. Yet, he stayed in the USMC Reserve, serving out of New Orleans for some time after the war. Dress Alpha coat remains in VERY GOOD Condition, showing light to moderate signs of age, wear, use and long terms storage. There is some light mothing to the inside of the right sleeve, but this is not readily apparent when the coat is displayed and only visible under close inspection. Coat shows NO readily apparent soiling, staining or fading and remains very solid. CPL Stenger’s information remains clearly visible to the sleeve linings of the interior. Ribbons and marksmanship badges appear to have been on the coat since the 50s and appear completely untouched since the day they were placed on the uniform. Unfortunately the cross is missing from one of the badges, but this is a relatively easy replacement. Hat remains in VERY GOOD Condition as well and is the EARLY style USMC Visor Hat that is constructed with a natural wicker frame. NO readily apparent mothing, soiling, streaking, staining or fading to the hat and it, like the coat, displays extremely well. This set came to us straight from a collector in New Orleans that knew the family and obtained it directly from them. Also of note, until recently this set was on loan to the Louisiana Military Museum in Abbeville, Louisiana. Coat and hat come with a packet of research that verifies everything stated here and more. We have not fully researched CPL Stenger, but the documentation provided includes more than enough information to conduct further research if you so choose.
